Email Scam Affecting Parishes
The Archdiocese has been notified that several local parishes have been affected recently by an email scam. The target appears to be staff members or volunteers who have email addresses that can be found on the parish’s website. Using the pastor’s name, the scammer will contact these staff members/volunteers via email and ask for a favor; once the staff member/volunteer responds, the scammer will request assistance with obtaining an iTunes gift card. The scammer’s email may come from a domain other than the parish’s domain (e.g., Gmail.com instead of ParishName.org). The fraudulent emails are more difficult to detect on a mobile device, as it is not immediately evident in a mobile view that the “pastor’s” email address is not correct.
If you receive such a fraudulent email, please contact your IT professional – do not respond to the email. Please share this information with staff members and volunteers.
