St. Mary’s and St. Michael’s Men’s Club, established in the summer of 2001, held its First Fish Fry during Lent of 2002. Each year they serve dinner on Fridays during Lent, except for Good Friday. The first year 250-400 per night enjoyed the Fish Fry. This has since grown to 650-850 meals per night. Over 4000 meals per season!
It takes a few good men volunteering during the week and 20-30 men on Fridays between 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm to make this go smoothly. There are always service opportunities for students from Confirmation, Boy Scouts and Honor Societies as well. It takes many willing hands to make this event run so smoothly and be so successful.
The funds generated from the dinners go to support the Club’s philanthropic outreach. Over the years the Men’s Club has donated thousands of dollars back to St. Mary’s and St. Michael’s, St. Croix Catholic School, SCV Faith Formation as well as other local charities.
Most of these funds are directed towards special, non-budget items, as determined by the Men’s Club Board. Funds have been directed at such special projects as windows for both parishes, an ice maker at St. Mary’s, the rectory deck, pop-up tents for use at the church festivals, paint and supplies to repaint the Dominican Sister’s Convent and purchasing the elevator in the John and Mary Building. In recent years the Men’s Club has joined St. Michael’s CCW and purchased replacement silverware, storage racks, serving tables and other kitchen needs for St. Michael’s. The Men’s Club has also been proud to be able to support the various ministries of our two parishes by donating funds to such groups as SCCS, St. Croix Valley Faith Formation (including Vacation Bible School and Confirmation student retreats), and Eagle Scout projects. They have also donated supplies and manpower to such events as the Chimbote Dinner, Eucharistic Procession Dinner for priests, Volunteer Appreciation Dinners and others. One project that the Men’s Club is especially proud to have supported over the years is the purchase and assembly of many thousands of Catholic Spiritual Care Packages sent to our Military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Men, 18 years and older, interested in joining the Men’s Club or those interested in volunteering should contact Bob Simmet , Co-Chair of Men’s Club, or 651-226-1001.
